My obsession with plants was fueled by being stuck at home all the time. Having my plants to take care of helped me get through the last year of covid, and I love watching them grow. On the flip side, I feel extremely detached from my art practice because I haven't been able to work with clay for an entire year now. This is the longest I've gone without touching clay since I was introduced to ceramics in 2016. I chose to make a monstera leaf and a vase for this project to combine these two realities that have influenced my mental health during covid. Using rhino to create a vase was comforting and I'm looking forward to bringing it to life in 3D with paper. My monstera leaf has overlapping tabs so to rectify that I'm going to cut out two leaves and do opposite cuts so I have every tab necessary to put it together. I plan to attach pipe cleaners to the built paper leaves as stems and this will allow me to display them in the vase.  I know there's overlap with the out...

I ran into problems with this project in the beginning so I focused on getting a solid foundation for how to build and unroll non-representational objects first before getting into real-life objects. The real-life objects I chose to model in rhino are a toothbrush, tube of toothpaste, and mouth wash. I chose these objects because when I was experiencing the worst months of my depression, just getting out of bed to brush my teeth was incredibly difficult. Maintaining a routine without depression is difficult because of my ADHD, so I've worked hard to figure out what works best for me. Now I keep my floss, toothpaste, and a toothbrush on my bedside table because it's much more motivating to take care of myself when it's right there staring at me.

Papercraft Research

After looking through all of the links I chose to do more research into the artist duo Zim & Zou. I was drawn to their " Colorful Paper Village" and "Atlantis"  installations because they remind me of the video game "Little Big Planet" that I used to play with my sisters a lot as kids. I find whimsical little worlds to be very endearing because they take my imagination on a journey. I spent a good while staring at the photos from both of these installations thinking of how tiny creatures would live in the environments and interact in the paper worlds that Zim & Zou created. I'm not particularly jazzed that these designs were created for a fashion brand but we're all starving artists living in the hell that is late-stage capitalism so I am looking past the consumerism aspect of these two works because I love them so much.  Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann are the two French artists based in Dordogne, France, that make up Zim &...

Mesh Mixer Assignment

During the speed dating critiques, my partners expressed interest in my virus conquering astronaut but I wasn't attached to the design and felt there was more to work with in my clit crown/abstracto sculpturo design. My inspiration for my refined version of this object was shrine concepts from a Zelda video game. The shrines are particularly interesting because of the dynamic structural designs. Shrines in the real world have powerful connotations and I wanted to emphasize the fantastical power of my objects with the floating glossy chrome labia above the clit shrine. I played around with the sculpting tool and the paintbrush to add texture and visual depth to the rock base and water pool.  I used Tinkercad to reshape the backing of the labia and have a more elongated gemstone look to it. I gave the structural base a wet rock look and I placed the structure in a body of water because I envision this clit shrine being incredibly difficult to reach by boat with beautiful and vicious ...
