End of Term - Milestone Projects Review

Image
Objectified Response: I find the first project of the semester in any class to be incredibly overwhelming so the biggest challenge for this was getting over myself and not stressing out about it. I enjoyed the quick gratification turn around for this project bcuz this class is the only studio class I've taken since everything went online. This class was really validating in that regard because I had felt really detached from my art practice for 10 months prior.  Mesh Mashup: Where it started: Finished lewk in Rhino: I liked the evolutionary process of this project that came with working in Mesh Mixer and then Rhino.  I had used blender before in MADT and really enjoyed sculpting and working with lights so I got to play with that in Mesh Mixer and then in Rhino.  Papercraft:  I felt super defeated at the beginning of this project because I had a hard time getting started with figuring out objects of significance and then translating those into Rhino.  The biggest...

3D Hollow Form Object Hybrid Project

Here are my seven original objects I came up with for concept generation:  1&2. 3. 4. 5.  6. 7.  My partner for this project is Ben Ewacha. For my contribution to the hybrid I chose to work with the swirling vase design I came up with the week prior. I had done a bunch of variations the vase by playing around with the loft style and here is what I had come up with:  Together Ben and I chose to work with the vase to the left of the middle.  Here are two of Ben's design inspo from his own objects: From here we did some brainstorming and we were both interested in creating a cage like structure that would swirl in the opposite direction around the vase. I did some preliminary sketches on my white board: Here is where we got to in Rhino: 1. is the first cage/lattice design 2. was the first hybrid idea put together 3. is the first shape change for the cage/lattice because I thought it would look better attached to the surface of the vase  4. is what the upda...

Papercraft Final Object

I had designed a lip for the vase but ran out of paper in the color I had used for the vase panels and it was easier to position my leaves with the vase open. I trialed it over the lip of the vase before I put the panels together.

Papercraft First Prototype

Here is my finished prototype:  Making my first prototype was a big learning experience. When I was putting the panels of my vase together I thought that starting by attaching them in sets of two and then end with four panels and six panels together for the final attachment would work best but this was not the case. Trying to smooth the tabs down against the adjacent panel of side four and side six was tedious and difficult so now I know for next time I'm better off gluing together a six side panel, a three side panel, and leave the final one out to be attached last.  I did like how round the vase was at this stage and then later when I was reworking the lip of the vase in rhino I figured out why it elongated. The outer right panel is the original sizing panel for my vase. I forgot that I had elongated the panel to fit the page before I had printed out my prototypes last weekend. I think it still works, especially because in ceramics warping can happen at any stage of the proc...
